Third Candle’s debut EP, Puzzles of the Ocean is an ambitions maelstrom of grungy, multi-layered instrumentation reminiscent of early 90’s prog infused with modern rock sensibilities and vocal experimentation. In the surprisingly enlightening eye of the hurricane, however, rests a euphoric scene of pure serenity that fans of Isis, the Red Sparrows, and Opeth’s acoustic work will find heavenly.

Songs like the eponymous closing track violently throw the listener headfirst from the plane with a hallucinatory euphoria in place of a chute, only to faithfully provide a welcoming net three feet from the ground. Chase Boyer’s concrete percussive, oftentimes tribal drumming in “3/4 reborn” creates a dark, rhythmic waltz that somehow finds beauty in the face of absolute calamity, while Brock Lacroix’s stable bottom end reliably enhances the already tight rhythm section, putting meat on the bone in heavier songs like “Forest” and “Novus.” Yet, to label Puzzles bipolar and pigeonhole it into yet another category of modern prog rock bands embarrassingly trying to replace Tool is grossly inaccurate.

While the manic highs and abysmal lows of the tracks themselves do indeed infuse an element of nostalgic power vocals and crunching drop D guitar chords, Kris Scherer’s heartbreaking, melodical ear worms layer beautifully with Bobby Gray’s technically oriented, mathematical riffs and phrases, providing the listener raw emotion juxtaposed with clinical precision.

ALCHEMIST is an incredible Australian metal/progressive band I’ve been lucky enough to grow up watching here in Canberra. Their sound is absolutely unique and live they are a powerhouse.
